Hate the Idea of Cold Pitching? Here’s How to Sell Without Feeling Awkward
Years ago, I joined a network marketing business and was handed a sales script to message everyone I knew—family, friends, co-workers, even strangers to invite them to a call.
💬 “Hey [First Name], are you available tonight from 7-8, I have something exciting I’d love to share with you! Can you join me on a call to tell you all about it?”
I sent hundreds of messages.
And guess how many calls I booked? Less than five.
It was frustrating, embarrassing, and made me decide sales wasn’t for me.
I thought: If selling means tricking them on to a call, I’m not cut out for business.
That experience made sales feel creepy and made me avoid starting my own business for a long time.
If you’ve ever felt like that, I want you to know—that’s the wrong way to sell and doesn’t mean you are the problem. You’re not.
Think about it: When was the last time YOU bought something from a cold message? Exactly.
There’s a better way.
Here’s what to do instead:
Instead of sending cold DMs and hoping for the best, try this 7-step process (this is what I teach my coaching clients when they’re launching their businesses and want to sell with confidence):
1️⃣ Get Clear on the Problem You Solve
Before you sell anything, be able to answer this: What problem do you help people solve?
2️⃣ Know Exactly Who You Help
Go beyond “women entrepreneurs”, “busy moms” or “high-achieving professionals.”
What are they struggling with right now?
What questions keep them up at night?
Where do they spend their time online?
3️⃣ Use Their Words, Not Yours
If your ideal client says, "I just don’t know how to start," don’t tell them “You need a monetization strategy.”
4️⃣ Read People’s Profiles Before Messaging Them
Before typing a message, look at their content to see if they actually need what you offer.
5️⃣ Build Relationships First
Selling is about trust. Start by engaging with their content—comment, share, and support before sliding into their DMs.
6️⃣ Track Your Interactions
A simple Google Sheet works! Keep track of who you’ve connected with, so when the time is right, your message isn’t out of the blue.
7️⃣ Expect It to Take 7+ Interactions Before They’re Ready
Most people won’t buy the first time they hear about your offer. But when you show up consistently, the sale becomes effortless.
Selling doesn’t have to feel sales-y. It can feel like helping.
The first time I made a sale without cold pitching? It felt amazing. Someone came to me and said, “I feel like you’ve bugged my house and know exactly what I’m going through—-I have to work with you”
And that’s exactly what I want for you.
