Overcome Procrastination So You Can Achieve Your Goals

I used to think procrastination meant I was just lazy. I’d sit down, ready to tackle a big goal—whether it was launching something new, sending that important email, or making a personal change—and suddenly, I’d find myself doing everything except what I planned. Scrolling, organizing, helping someone else with their problem instead of handling my own. Sound familiar?

It turns out, procrastination isn’t about being lazy at all. It’s our brain’s way of protecting us from perceived threats—uncertainty, failure, judgment. It triggers a Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn response that keeps us stuck, making progress feel impossible.

Why You Procrastinate

What you experience isn’t a lack of motivation, laziness or poor time management. It’s your brain trying to protect you. When something feels uncertain or overwhelming, your nervous system triggers one of four responses:

·       Fight: You overthink and obsess over tiny details, but never finish.

·       Flight: You distract yourself with other tasks instead of facing the real one.

·       Freeze: You get stuck in analysis paralysis, researching instead of doing.

·       Fawn: You abandon your own goals to help others instead.

Sound familiar? This cycle keeps us from reaching our goals. But the good news? If you recognize which response you’re having, you can break the cycle and take action to move forward.

How to Stop Procrastinating and Take Action

Here’s what I want you to do the next time you catch yourself procrastinating:

Pause. Literally stop what you're doing. Take a deep breath. Your brain is trying to keep you safe, but you’re in control.

Notice which response is showing up. Are you fighting by overanalyzing? Fleeing by distracting yourself? Freezing in indecision? Fawning by prioritizing others over yourself? Recognizing your response is half the battle.

Pivot. Instead of staying stuck, take a simple, small action
